Reader Question: Is there an age limit for getting LASIK? I'm in my 50s and wondering if it's too late for me to have the procedure done

There’s no strict upper age limit for LASIK. The primary determining factor for a person’s candidacy is the overall health and stability of their eyes.

Many people in their 50s and beyond have had successful LASIK outcomes. However, while healing may be slower for older patients, it’s not a major concern. Your ophthalmologist will provide post-operative instructions to ensure you heal properly.

Are there specific concerns for older patients?

Although LASIK is typically safe, you should be aware of some considerations for older patients.  As we age, our eyes naturally produce fewer tears, increasing the likelihood of dry eyes.

You may also develop age-related eye conditions like cataracts. These conditions may need to be addressed before or instead of LASIK.

How can you know if LASIK is right for you?

You must talk to an experienced ophthalmologist about the procedure. They can give you a thorough evaluation to see if you’re a good candidate for LASIK.

They will assess your eye health and stability and discuss any conditions that may affect the procedure's outcome.

If they don’t think LASIK is right for you, they may present other options that suit your situation. Overall, don’t hesitate to reach out to a qualified eye doctor.
