Reader Question: Can you get LASIK twice? I had the surgery done years ago, but my vision has regressed a bit.

It can be frustrating to have your vision regress after getting LASIK. However, it’s possible to get LASIK twice.

The procedure is referred to as LASIK enhancement or retreatment. It’s safe, and many people have undergone a second LASIK treatment to address changes in their vision after the initial procedure.

But is a second LASIK procedure right for you?

Your eye doctor can determine whether or not you’re a good candidate for a second procedure. They’ll examine your overall eye health, your cornea’s thickness, and the stability of your current prescription.

Generally speaking, you may be a good candidate for a LASIK enhancement if:

  • Your vision has regressed significantly and is causing you issues.
  • Your eyes are healthy with no underlying conditions.
  • Your cornea is thick enough to allow for additional reshaping.
  • Your prescription has been stable for at least several months.

Ultimately, this decision is a personal one. However, if you are considering it, schedule a consultation with an eye surgeon to discuss your options and concerns.

What can you expect from a second LASIK?

The second LASIK procedure is very similar to the first one. The recovery time is also the same, and most people return to normal activities after a few days.

The success rates for LASIK enhancements are generally high, but as with any procedure, there are potential risks and complications. These can include:

  • Dry eyes
  • Glare
  • Halos
  • Infection
