Reader Question: How often do I need to have eye exams after getting LASIK to make sure my vision stays sharp and healthy?

That’s a good question! Regular eye exams are important for keeping your eyes healthy and maintaining vision. Even after LASIK, you should still get eye exams.

Here’s a table I drew up showing how often you should go after getting LASIK:

Time after LASIKFollow-up appointments
After surgeryYou’ll have several appointments within the first few weeks and months after LASIK. These appointments are important for monitoring healing and catching problems early.
6 months to a year After your vision is stable, visit your doctor again around the 6th month to a year. This is to see if everything is good and address dryness and other minor issues.
After the first yearAfter the procedure, you should get an eye exam once every year. This helps prevent or detect eye problems like cataracts, glaucoma, and other age-related changes.

Aside from getting regular eye exams, you should see your doctor if you experience:

  • Blurry vision
  • Eye pain
  • Floaters

It’s important to get early intervention for eye health, even after LASIK.
